Now that we have established in the first comic that Saturday is the day of the Sabbath, let’s go to the biggest objection I have heard to no longer practicing on Saturday: Paul.
Paul says in Romans that “it doesn’t matter what day you observe”. I have had this thrown at me a few times when it comes to my Sabbath practices. However, if we look at chapter 14 in his letter to the Romans, we can see Paul is talking about food, not the Sabbath. This whole section begins and ends with food. It is all about food. So what does food have to do with a day? Fasting was a common, sacred practice. When one abstains from food. There is no commanded day in Scripture that says you have to fast on this day, but the Jewish people had made several traditions that say certain days are fast days. Paul is saying here, “sure, why not”. There is nothing against fasting. Pick a day you want to fast, don’t beat your brother over the head that they aren’t though. Which is the overall sentiment of this chapter in all. We should be encouraging one another, not nit picking on what we think someone is doing wrong and nagging them over it.
Some other items that get thrown as witnesses to Sabbath being Sunday are: Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2, Colossians 2:16-17. With the exception of the Colossians passage, none of these mention the Sabbath. They were just get togethers. If we were recording what everyone did today and someone 2,000 years later added it to the Bible, would they think we had two Sabbaths now, Sunday and Wednesday? (as many many churches have services both days/nights) They were getting together the first day of the week. And why not? It was still the weekend.
I want to address the Colossians passage specifically as well because I have had this used at me as well, but the context of what Paul is saying here isn’t “don’t let them judge you for observing Sabbath on a different day”, but “don’t let them judge you for observing Sabbath”. The next verse gives us who is judging this group Paul is writing to:
“18. Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.” – The Gnostics were around and bother the believers in this assembly. If you do some research on the Gnostic beliefs, they believe some really strange stuff, much of it going directly against the Bible.
Then if you really want to get into where the Sabbath is on Sunday thought originated, go and look up Convert’s Catechism of Catholic Doctrine and An Abridgement of the Christian Doctrine on the subject.
