I thought this would be a fun concept to draw. When thinking about the Torah Portion comic, this crossed my mind to do for it, but thought it better in a separate series (if it gets to that). I have friends that are flat earth, and friends that are globe earth. When the discussion comes up, I let them know I am a “I don’t care earther”. Whatever shape/size/placement of the earth is, it doesn’t change my day to day. We could be all flying on the back of a giant turtle for all I care.
I know many look at events in the Bible, like this one, and look at the people as uneducated or unlearned. “They don’t know everything we know today”.
There are two things I would like you to consider:
1) What if they did, which is the concept of this comic, how would that change things? In this case, Jacob would not have named the place “House of God” and considered it a gate to Heaven. He would have, just like this comic, thought “weird” and moved on with his day. He wouldn’t have declared that God was *his* God, not just his father’s. The events that happen next, probably wouldn’t have happened. All the children born to Jacob might not have been born as it talks about God opening and closing the wombs of his wives. No Israel, no commands, no Jesus. What are we messing up by applying what we “know” from outside the Bible to the Bible and things God might be telling us?
2) Who are we to consider them unlearned/uneducated? I once had a friend tell me that we are so much smarter than people even 100 years ago because we have the internet. “We can just look up anything and learn about it”. I would argue the opposite is true. Because we rely on the internet so much, we aren’t learning anything, just absorbing information. Really, I can’t even say that as most, I know I am guilty of it, will forget the information as soon as that “what is that” moment is satisfied. Also, I would challenge anyone with this mindset, that thinks we are so much more superior because of our technology, to go and research ancient structures like the pyramids or the cities that have been carved out of a single stone. Feats that we, to this day, cannot duplicate. With all of our technology, we cannot figure out how to cut a perfect 90 degree angle inside of a large stone for a hole, but ancient people did it.
So was Jacob really unlearned when he made the statements he did?
